As many other shelter dogs out there, Sanford’s story is a heartbreaking one. Fortunately, in his particularly situation it has a happy ending. It all started in April, when the stray dog got hit by a car. Hungry, scared and wounded, the authorities took him to a small shelter in Dallas,Texas. Unfortunately, the shelter didn’t have the resources required to help Sanford.

“He was physically broken … and when the volunteer went to see him, he didn’t really make any effort to come and say hello,” Kerry Anechiarico, executive director of Dallas DogRRR, told The Dodo. “It’s almost like he had given up, and he was just waiting for his time to come.”

But from that point on, Sanford’s life suffered an incredible transformation. There he received the medical care he needed and started to walk again. More than that, in the meantime he found a foster home too. But the most important thing, he rediscovered his lovely smile again.

“I am presently on my 52nd foster, and I can genuinely say that I’ve never had anyone as jovial as him. He looks at me in a way that no other animal or human has ever looked at me, including my own pets. Essentially, the only time he is not smiling is when he is asleep or eating,” Sanford’s foster mom, Karen Velazquez told the Dodo.

Now, the next step is to find him a fever home and a some lovely fur parents, just as he deserves. “He’ll be a great family dog. He’ll get along with other dogs and all humans. He even does well with kids,” Kerry Anechiarico told the Dodo. “He’s the perfect companion dog that you can come home too.”
