These giant multicolored squirrels are so beautiful, people can’t believe they’re real

When I think about squirrels, the first thing that crosses my mind is probably that cute little rodent who frequently visits my backyard to rob the bird feeders. A pretty common sight, because I am so sure almost everyone in North America had to deal with these innocent thieves at some point. But what about a huge multicolored squirrel? Well, most of the people would say it can be real. But they’re so wrong!

Malabar or the Indian giant squirrel is as real as breathing and just like its name says, it lives in the Indian forests. These breathtaking creatures are so big that when squirrel expert John Koprowski first spotted one, in 2006, he thought they had to be primates.

But in fact, the Malabar is actually a squirrel, but it looks so different from the squirrels we are used to. These giants are twice the size of a common squirrel, with a body span up to 36 inches from head to tail. But it is not the size that makes these cute creatures so unique, but their surreal fur.

A combination of black, orange, brown, maroon and purple makes the Malabar’s fur so special. A spectacular sight for as, an essential posses for them as this colorful fur helps them to get the best camouflage against predators.

“In the shaded understory of a dense forest, the patchy colors and dark hues are a great adaptation to avoiding detection,” squirrel expert John Koprowski said. “But when you see these in the sunlight, they show their ‘true colors’ and beautiful pelage.
