Lately, the African elephants have suffered a massive drop of their numbers due to poaching. With the price of ivory constantly increasing, more and more elephants are being slaughtered, and their babies are left unprotected and without having developed the abilities needed to survive on their own. But thankfully, there are still a few places where devoted people dedicate their lives to help these hopeless elephants.
Such a place is Nairobi Elephant Orphanage in Kenya. Here a group of volunteers and animal lovers offer comfort to these innocent creatures. The place – a heaven on Earth for abandoned baby elephants was founded by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, a big-hearted woman who dedicated her entire life to rescue orphaned animals. Thanks to her efforts, hundreds of elephants received a second chance to life in over four decades since this sanctuary exists.
Daphne has somehow managed to found a secret milk formula that’s very close to an elephant mother’s milk. Thanks to her secret, all the abandoned elephants have managed to made it through. But it could not have been otherwise when here they’re all surrounded only by love and kindness. People who work here are taking care of these poor creature as they’re their own children.
And since elephants are known as some of the most social and intelligent creatures on Earth, Daphne’s efforts are deeply rewarded as the majestic creatures she’s been taking care of show their gratitude in such a moving way. “Elephants have taught me how to put the bad things behind turn the page and get on with living,” she said. “Understanding the traumas that elephants have to put up with and how they cope with it has made me a stronger person.”
