A moving reunion between an old elephant and her daughter and granddaughter won everyone’s heart on the internet, after the adorable scene was captured on camera. The heartwarming snaps were taken at the zoo in Halle, Germany.
Pori – a 39-year-old elephant lived separated from her daughter Tana, 19, for over 12 years. But now, she was finally moved from Bergzoo in Berlin to the city of Halle, where she got the chance to reunite her daughter and two granddaughters. The moment they’ve seen each other for the first time after so many years was absolutely touching. The heart-melting photos show Pori touching trunks with her daughter and her 4-year-old granddaughter, Tamika. She also got the chance to met her other granddaughter, named Elani who’s only one-year-old.
Unlikely most wild animals, elephants are very social creatures. They live in a matriarchal society, where a female called matriarch leads the herd. The females usually remains alongside their moms for life.
The zoo announced in a statement that for the next few days, the elephant house will remain closed to give Pori the chance to accommodate with her new home. For the moment, the 39-old female will separated from her offsprings, then following that to join them.
Pori was born in Zimbabwe in 1981 and she was initially brought to Magdeburg Zoo in Germany, back in 1983. 18 years later, in 2001 she gave birth to the her first calf – Tania.
“Pori’s arrival in Halle is an important step in modern elephant husbandry,” the zoo director – Dennis Muller said. “In the future, all elephant herds in European zoos should be cared for in such natural family structures. Today we have come a great deal closer to this goal.”
